You may have noticed a change in the way NMC’s Urgent Care clinics handle testing for Strep Throat. Previously, NMC used a rapid strep test, and then followed up with an additional PCR test if the rapid test came back negative. Because falsely negative results are not uncommon, providers often requested this second test.
Going forward, rather than conducting two tests for most patients, NMC will now simply be doing a PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) test for all patients with possible Strep. PCR test is more accurate and is covered by insurance. Patients will need to wait a little longer for the result, but will generally find out within 30-60 minutes. This change offers a more accurate test, and a straightforward process using only one test for all patients.
