The CPG Coordinating Council gathered to rate blinded DAISY Award nominations to choose the winner. The DAISY Award® was awarded to one of NMC’s nurses on Tuesday, July 7th.
Tonya Sheltra, an RN in Urology, was honored with The DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day. Two excerpts from the nominations said:
“…Over the past six months, Tonya has gone above and beyond in her role as the solo clinic nurse in urology. In a position that demands clinical excellence, organization, and resilience, she has consistently demonstrated exceptional professionalism and commitment to patient care. Managing the responsibilities of the clinic largely on her own, she ensures that patients receive not only timely care but also the right care—advocating for them, coordinating services, and following through on every detail. What truly sets Tonya apart is the heart she brings to her work. She approaches every patient interaction with compassion and dedication. She consistently goes the extra mile to ensure patients feel heard, supported, and cared for—often stepping in wherever needed without hesitation. Tonya’s reliability, leadership, and unwavering commitment to excellence make her exceptionally deserving of this nomination. Our clinic, our patients, and our team are better because of her.”
“…I’ve watched how caring, compassionate, kind, understanding, and unbelievably talented Tonya is as a nurse. She truly takes pride in everything she does, from answering questions and scheduling appointments to changing endless and challenging catheters. From the office to being called to the ED or PCU/ICU, she’s the first they call for help. It’s truly magical to watch her with the elderly patients in this community that have come to depend on her smiling face at each appointment. She recalls so many things from each patient, and they truly appreciate that she actually listens. Tonya deserves the Daisy Award because she truly embraces her role here at NMC and is a great example of how you can grow up in this community and be a friendly face in health care.”
