NMC Pumps Up Dump Your Plump

Northwestern Medical Center's “Dump Your Plump” competition is underway with a record of 272 NMC employees and 13 spouses joining this fun, friendly competition for better health.  NMC'ers are working hard to change or maintain their exercise and nutrition habits to shed unwanted pounds or to maintain a healthy weight.

The “Dump Your Plump” challenge is part of NMC's “Healthy Ü” employee wellness program that promotes worksite wellness through its focus on exercise, nutrition, team building and behavior modification.  As part of the program, individuals set weight loss goals from 0-24 pounds.  They earn points for their team for exercising at least 30 minutes, 5 days per week and reaching their weight loss/management goals.  They do this with the support of their team members and the team captain, who hosts confidential weigh-ins each week to track the team’s progress.  This year at NMC, the competition began earlier (January instead of April) and will last longer (12 weeks instead of 8), and is already off to a strong start.

Leo GaudreauWith creative team names such as “Mission Slimpossible,” “Weapons of Mass Reduction,” and “Jiggle Belles,” some of the fun of this competition comes in brainstorming names for the teams.  One such team this year, “Adult Supervision Required” is made up of 8 members, 6 of which are from the hospital's Plant and Property Department. Leo Gaudreau, NMC's Plant Manager, is one of those team members.  About “Dump Your Plump,” he says, “I like that it's very supportive—they give you information that you can use.  The team aspect is fun because it helps motivate you.  It's better as a team, tracking each other's progress, because it helps push you forward.”

Adam ThompsonThroughout the challenge, prizes are given out to keep employees motivated, although for most, the result of better health habits is the best reward.  Adam Thompson, an NMC Maintenance Worker, has significantly reduced his intake of soda since the beginning of Dump Your Plump.  Prior to the program's start, he was drinking an average of 6, 20 ounce bottles of soda during his work day, with another 4 or 5 cans of soda at home each night.  Now, Adam is choosing lower calorie drinks, like Vitamin Water, and is only having ½ glass of soda with dinner.  Adam is also being more conscious about his activity level.  Instead of jumping in his truck each time he needs to change location on the hospital campus, Adam is opting to walk between buildings, even if he is hauling items with him.  In the first two weeks of the challenge, Adam has lost 6.2 pounds.  “The good thing with our group is that it's competitive with the guys,” says Adam.  “Everybody is checking in on each other and it's about bragging rights for the week.  I am enjoying it when I see results on the scale, and see weight loss each week.”

According to NMC Health Promotion Assistant Cindy Rutkowski, last year NMC employees lost a total of 640 pounds throughout the challenge.  “This is an equivalent of 2560 sticks of butter worth of weight,” says Rutkowski.  “NMC'ers are off to a great start this year.  It will be interesting to hear what success stories come out of this year's competition.”

NMC's employee wellness program has won a “Gold Award” 6 consecutiveyears from the Governor's Council on Sports and Physical Fitness.  In addition to its own program, NMC works with other companies to improve morale and reduce health risks within their workforces.  For more information on worksite wellness programs, please call Pam Cross, NMC's Health Promotion Manager at 524-1227.

1st Annual Medical Staff Evening of Appreciation Honors Providers; Deogracias “Deo” P. Esguerra, MD Service Award Presented to Dr. Fred Holmes

On Friday evening, October 28th, Northwestern Medical Center hosted its first annual Medical Staff Evening of Appreciation at the St. Albans Historical Museum’s Bliss Auditorium.  In addition to years of service awards for providers, NMC established and presented the first annual Deogracias “Deo” P. Esguerra, MD Service Award to honor a provider with a “passion for excellence and dedication to the patients of our community.”   Dr. Esguerra’s widow, Evelyn, and their daughter, Renita Rodriguez, travelled from Buffalo, NY to be on hand to help present the inaugural award.

According to Lowrey Sullivan, MD, NMC’s Chief Medical Officer, “Deo Esguerra was known to many of us as one of the most caring and passionate physicians on the NMC medical staff. He was a man who loved both the science and the art of medicine…He cared about people: from the patients he saw, his community, the nursing staff, and all the other physicians in the hospital… He was inspirational in his passion and commitment to caring and healing.”

In presenting the first annual Deogracias “Deo” P. Esguerra, MD Service Award to Fred Holmes, MD, pediatrician of Mousetrap Pediatrics, Jill Berry Bowen, NMC CEO said, “The winner of the first annual Deo Award is a physician who has served our community tirelessly for many years. Not only does he have loyal patients who never want to leave his service, but he has gone far above and beyond the call of duty as he has dedicated himself to the health care needs of his patients and the difficulties they face within our own cities and towns.  He has never wavered from his passion: taking care of children and their families… We honor a silent giant, a passionate great man having served this community with dignity and dedication for over 40 years.”

Dr. Holmes was presented with an engraved crystal award.  A plaque will also hang at NMC featuring his name and other recipients to be named in future years.  Upon receiving the award, Dr. Holmes brought his wife, Joyce, to the front of the room to share it with him.  As a surprise, many members of Dr. Holmes’ family, including son Chip Holmes and his wife Margie; daughter Jennifer Holmes, her husband Derek Adams and their son Jakob Adams; and sister Meg Geoghegan, were escorted into the room for the presentation.  Dr. Holmes’ son Christopher, who is currently living in Madagascar, was able to listen by phone and offer his congratulations to his father following the presentation.

“I always thought that Deo was the epitome of the ultimate physician,” said Fred Holmes, in reaction to receiving the Deo Award.  “He was always patient and respectful, and the patient was always right.  To have Evelyn there—she’s a dear sweet friend—and then to have my family show up… it was unbelievable, not because of the trophy, but because of Evelyn and Deo.  This means I will forever be connected to Evelyn & Deo.”

NMC Recognized as a Top Performer on Pneumonia Care-- Only VT Hospital to Earn Designation

Northwestern Medical Center (NMC) is pleased to announce that the Joint Commission has recognized NMC as a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures in the area of pneumonia care. NMC is the only hospital in Vermont to earn the “Top Performer” designation.  For the first time, the Joint Commission’s 2011 annual report on quality and safety, Improving America’s Hospitals, lists hospitals and critical access hospitals that are top performers in using evidence-based care processes closely linked to positive patient outcomes.

“Our staff works very hard to incorporate evidence-based practice, based on sound scientific evidence for the best patient outcomes,” says Celeste Kane Stebbins, RN, Med/Surg/ICU Nurse Manager at Northwestern Medical Center.  “We are thrilled to be recognized for our work in this area.”

As a Top Performing Hospital, NMC is among 405 hospitals being recognized for 2010, which represents the top 14 percent of Joint Commission accredited hospitals (of those that report core measure performance data).

On the core measure of pneumonia, NMC has consistently met this mark.  "The strength of the Core Measures is that they are really grounded in science," says Jane Catton, RN, NMC's Chief Quality Officer/Director of Process Improvement. “They are not put out there with the directive to 'do it because we want you to', but rather— they have been carefully researched and have scientifically shown they will improve outcomes.  I am proud of the hard work of our staff to earn this designation from the Joint Commission."

The Joint Commission is an independent, not-for-profit organization that accredits and certifies more than 19,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. Joint Commission accreditation and certification is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to meeting certain performance standards.

For more information on the Joint Commission’s Top Performer designation, please visit http://www.jointcommission.org/accreditation/top_performers.aspx. For more information about quality measures at NMC, please visit www.northwesternmedicalcenter.org/hospitalreportcard.
