Walk to Benefit Health Careers Scholarships Download a Walker Packet Here
St. Albans, Vt. – Northwestern Medical Center (NMC) is launching a new fall walkathon to support scholarships for area youth entering careers in health care. The first annual Health Careers Scholarship Walkathon, sponsored by MVP Health Care, will be held on Saturday, September 29th. The two-mile walk will be held on the hospital’s campus, a fitting location to meet the event’s theme.
For the past 20 years, NMC has given out scholarships to graduating high school seniors heading to college to pursue health care careers. The scholarships have been presented at the Health Professions Scholarship Dinner each spring, with awards coming from the Martin H. Wennar, MD Health Education Scholarship Fund.
Though the tradition hasn’t changed, times have. Expenses have increased, and health professionals are more and more in demand. In recognition of these changes, the Scholarship Dinner Committee has launched a new effort to raise additional funds to secure the long-term vitality of this program, thanks to an idea from some new members of the Committee.
“Two years ago, we began looking at ways to continue to grow the fund and appeal to the students,” says Dr. Wennar, committee chair. “We invited students from all of our local high schools to sit at the table with us and be involved in planning and promoting the event. Those students have had some incredible ideas, including the idea to add a fall walk-a-thon as an additional fundraiser.”
For more information about the walk, please call NMC’s Community Services office at 524-1239.
