 On Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010, Don Poirier, of St. Albans, and his family gathered at Northwestern Medical Center (NMC) to place a Leaf on the hospital’s Tree of Life in memory of Don’s wife, Jeanne “Jane” Poirier, who passed away in November, 2009.
Jane was an active volunteer at NMC. She began volunteering at NMC in August of 1998 and worked as a courier for many years. She later worked at the Information Desk in the main Lobby, greeting customers and helping them find their way around the hospital. She remained there until she became too ill to volunteer, and reluctantly gave back her photo ID and “neatly pressed” uniform. In all, Jane contributed 2,230 hours of service to NMC.
“Jane was a very dedicated volunteer, and a member of the NMC Auxiliary,” said Dolly MacNeil, NMC Volunteer Services Manager. “She was an inspiration to us all in the way she handled her illness, with courage and grace…and we miss her.”
 The "Tree of Life," on which the Leaf honoring Jane’s memory now resides, is a beautiful maple tree sculpture in the hospital entryway which displays the names of major donors and those who have been honored by major gifts. It has 300 engraveable brass "leaves" which commemorate gifts of $1,000 or more. At the base of the Tree are 12 engraveable "stones" to honor gifts of $5,000 or more.
