Northwestern Medical Center kicked off the installation of the Meditech 6.0 electronic medical record and hospital-wide computer system on February 2nd and 3rd with a standing-room-only introductory meeting, module-specific sessions, and a festive ice cream social.
“The fully-integrated Meditech system will allow us to connect the dots for our patients,” said NMC CEO Jill Berry Bowen at the kickoff. “It will help prevent errors and, over time, improve our care.”
NMC staff will be working with Meditech staff on a collaborative approach to customizing and installing the integrated system at the hospital.
“It used to be that each separate department had its own system,” said Dave Mungovan of Meditech to a group of NMC staff at the kick off. “Now, everything in each department is connected and we are all one application, so all of us are reliant upon one another. Each team or department is sort of like a brick and the integration is the mortar. You’ll be working on making your brick strong and straight, but you are only going to be part of a strong wall if every brick is developed so it can be put in place correctly and properly integrated.”
NMC is currently targeting October, 2010 for the “Go Live” of the majority of the Meditech system, with Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) and the Emergency Department module will follow in 2011 and 2012.
