Harrison Concrete Helps NMC Create Accessible Healing Garden
 The Northwestern Medical Center Healing Garden is now handicap accessible, thanks to a generous donation from Harrison Concrete. On Monday, June 28th, a crew of workers from Harrison Concrete arrived at NMC to transform the once-gravel walking path to a fresh, smooth concrete path, suitable for all ages and mobility levels.
“We are so thrilled with Harrison’s generosity,” says Olivia Laporte, NMC Oncology Case Manager. “It’s a true gift to the entire community to have this quiet, reflective garden accessible to everyone. The goal for the garden is to provide a peaceful place on the hospital campus for people dealing with cancer and other illnesses to be able to escape the clinical environment for a while—with Harrison’s donation, the garden is now completely accessible to anyone who is looking for a little solitude.”
The Healing Garden, built in June 1999 on the Northwestern Medical Center campus, was conceived by members of the Healing Circle Breast Cancer Support Group as a living tribute to those who have been lost to cancer. Its ribbon-shaped walkway winds through a perennial garden, past benches and flowering fruit trees, and around its centerpiece, a reflecting pool and waterfall.
Connie Stanley Little, a local gardener, is helping maintain the Healing Garden at NMC this summer. She recognized a need to make the path to the garden accessible, and reached out to Jim Harrison of Harrison Concrete for help—and the Harrison family readily agreed to donate their time and materials for the project.
 “I came up and looked at the garden, and could identify with the problem,” said Jim Harrison. “We were just trying to help out, and thought it made sense to do this, for the human aspect.”
