Leslie Gardzina Achieves Certified Diabetes Educator Status
Leslie Gardzina, RD, CD, CDENorthwestern Medical Center is pleased to announce that Leslie Gardzina, Registered Dietitian (RD), has achieved Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) status. Through Gardzina’s accomplishment, Northwestern Medical Center now has three CDEs on staff: Debbie Robertson, RN, BSN, CDE; Kay Tran, MS, RD, CD, CDE, and Gardzina, RD, CD, CDE.

Candidates for CDE status must meet rigorous eligibility requirements to be eligible for certification. Achieving the CDE credential demonstrates to people with diabetes and employers that the health care professional possesses distinct and specialized knowledge, thereby promoting quality of care for people with diabetes. Currently, there are approximately 16,600 diabetes educators who hold CDE status from the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE).

Gardzina has worked for Northwestern Medical Center as a registered dietitian since 2005. Through the Chronic Disease Department, Gardzina, Tran, and Robertson offer one-on-one appointments and group sessions throughout Franklin & Grand Isle Counties to educate individuals with diabetes about their disease by teaching self management skills. The CDEs also work with physicians to create treatment plans for individuals with diabetes. In addition, a monthly support group for individuals with diabetes is offered for on-going support.
