CVAHEC Joins NMC’s Health Careers Scholarship Walk
St. Albans, Vt. – The Champlain Valley Area Health Education Center (CVAHEC) has joined organizers of the first annual Health Careers Scholarship Walkathon to provide a new twist to this walk, scheduled for this Saturday, September 29th on the Northwestern Medical Center (NMC) campus.

At Saturday’s event, walkers will be asked to stop at stations along the route to identify various health careers by the items on display. Those correctly identifying all of the careers at the stations will be eligible for a prize drawing at the conclusion of the event. CVAHEC normally uses these tools at school presentations on the types of health careers available, and walk organizers have adapted the activity for this event.

“We’re happy that CVAHEC has joined us to help with this activity,” says Jennifer Savage, NMC Community Relations Specialist. “We think it brings a fun and educational twist to our walk.”

This walk is a new event to support NMC’s Martin H. Wennar, MD, Health Education Scholarship Fund, and is sponsored by MVP Health Care. The two-mile walk will be held on the hospital’s campus, a fitting location to meet the event’s theme.

For the past 20 years, NMC has given out scholarships to graduating high school seniors heading to college to pursue health care careers. The scholarships have been presented at the Health Professions Scholarship Dinner each spring, with awards coming from the Martin H. Wennar, MD Health Education Scholarship Fund.

Though the tradition hasn’t changed, times have. Expenses have increased, and health professionals are more and more in demand. In recognition of these changes, the Scholarship Dinner Committee has launched this new effort to raise additional funds to secure the long-term viability of this program, thanks to an idea from some new youth members of the Committee.

The Health Careers Scholarship Walkathon will be held this Saturday, September 29th. Registration will begin at Cobblestone Health Commons at 8:30 a.m., with the walkers starting at 9:00 a.m. For more information about the walk, or to request a walker packet, please call NMC’s Community Services office at 524-1239 or visit www.northwesternmedicalcenter.org.
