St. Albans, Vt. -- The 19th Annual Jim Bashaw Fund Bowl-a-thon will be held on Saturday, March 20th at the St. Albans Bowling Center. Two back-to-back sessions will be offered, with space to accommodate 36 teams of six. The first session will be held from 2:00-4:00 p.m.; the second from 5:00-7:00 p.m. By participating in raising money for the fund, each player will receive two free games and free shoes for use during their session. Free Pizza Hut Pizza, cookies, and soda will also be provided at both sessions. Prizes will be given during each session for the team with the most spirit and the team that raises the most money. Anyone who raises more than $100 for the Fund will be entered into a grand prize drawing.
Jim Bashaw was a beloved teacher, guidance counselor and longtime girls’ basketball coach at BFA St. Albans. His death in August of 2000 from brain cancer affected not only his family and friends, but the entire community. In honor of Jim’s memory, a fund was established to provide financial assistance to residents of Franklin and Grand Isle Counties who are experiencing catastrophic illness from cancer or other causes.
The Annual Jim Bashaw Fund Bowlathon is one of the major events that helps support this important fund. In 2009, the Jim Bashaw Fund distributed $27,500 to 59 individuals in Franklin & Grand Isle Counties to help reduce the financial burden of cancer and other catastrophic illnesses. From 2001-2009, a total of 517 grants have been given for a total of $203,000. Historically, 43% of grants awarded from the Fund have helped pay for medications and other over the counter expenses; 29% of grants supported travel expenses; 15% for insurance co-pays and medical bills; 8% for medical supplies or equipment; and 5% for caregivers or assistance in the home.
Registration will close March 1st. Call Olivia Laporte at 524-8479 for more information or to register your team.
