Act 53 Public Hearing
On September 27, 2006, NMC hosted an evening public event to review community progress on the 2004 Act 53 Community Needs Assessment and to review hospital performance relating to the 2005 Act 53 Community Report. Newspaper advertising and email promotion generated a sparse crowd – and both attendees came to be supportive, having already heard the information through other discussions.
There is great information to be shared. Our community is actively working on all 11 of the priorities in the 2004 Community Needs Assessment. NMC, through the Center For Health & Wellness, is leading the work to address the leading cause of death (Cardiovascular Disease). Much of this work relating to the Act 53 document is being done in alignment with the Community Partnership’s emphasis on the 10 State Outcomes and the United Way’s efforts to assess and address community needs. The Hospital Report shows NMC ranks below the State average for pricing on all but three of the procedure charges we are benchmarked against. In addition, NMC has made significant progress on the Core Measures and the other quality data posted in the 2005 Report.
In light of the low turnout for the mandated approach, NMC is once again stepping beyond the requirement and offering additional opportunities for our community to participate in meaningful conversations about health care in our region. Members of the NMC team will be attending civic, social, and community meetings to talk with our neighbors about the Community Assessment, the Hospital Report, new services, new physicians, improvement projects, the impact of the Medicaid/Medicare cost shift on healthcare costs, etc. If your group would like a speaker on these topics, please call Terry Holmes in Community Services at 524-1280 or email her at tholmes@nmcinc.org.
