Northwestern Medical Center is a vibrant, not-for-profit, primary care hospital nestled at the top of Fairfield Street in St. Albans, Vermont. Our small size (we are licensed for 70 beds) brings a family feel to our modern facility and high-tech equipment.
A Historic Organization In A Young Facility:
NMC is one of the youngest hospital facilities in the State of Vermont. While our history dates back to the late 1880's, our patient care areas have each been renovated at least once since 1990.
A Growing Demand For Our Services:
NMC now cares for more than 2,100 inpatients and over 30,000 emergency patients each year. Our Family Birth Center welcomes approximately 500 babies each year. We conduct over 8,000 surgical and outpatient procedures each year, along with more than 260,000 lab tests and 47,000 diagnostic imaging exams. In total, more than $85 million of patient care is provided at NMC each year, for which we are reimbursed at only 64¢ on the dollar.
A Major Employer In Our Community:
NMC now employs more than 570 people through the hospital itself and our subsidiaries (Northwestern Occupational Health and our physician billing service, Northwestern Vermont Health Services). In terms of salary and benefits alone, NMC provides nearly $23 million to the regional economy. We are fortunate to be joined in our work by over 100 active volunteers who donate approximately 17,000 hours each year and more than 70 Active & Associate medical staff members.
An Emphasis on Efficiency & Cost Containment:
Throughout our growth and improvements, NMC has kept a watchful eye on efficiency. In 2007, NMC ranked second lowest among the 14 Vermont hospitals in terms of “costs per adjusted admission”-- with NMC's costs 15.1% below the State Median.
