NOH's Clinical Staff:

Verne Backus, MD
Dr. Backus, Medical Director of Northwestern Occupational Health, is Board Certified in Occupational & Environmental Medicine, a Certified Medical Review Officer for drug and alcohol testing, and a Certified Independent Medical Examiner. He is also Medical Director for the State of Vermont, Risk Management program for employee workers’ compensation claims, and Medical Director, Fletcher Allen Health Care, employee health department. Dr. Backus performs independent medical examinations and specializes in the management of individuals with complex medical conditions, and their safe and early return to work. He manages NOH’s Work Rehabilitation.

Laurance Thompson, M.S., Licensed Psychologist-Masters: Larry provides behavioral medicine care for outpatients at NOH and for those participating in the Multi-Disciplinary Work Rehabilitation/Pain Management Program. He specializes in the treatment of chronic pain, stress-related medical disorders and psychological factors associated with work-related medical conditions. He provides individual and group therapy targeted to the patient who may have psycho-social factors that interfere with successful rehabilitation and return-to-work. He teaches patients the prevention of disability and collaborates with industry, insurers, healthcare providers and patients to design successful return-to-work programs.

Kylee Ladd, PA-C, and Carly Kovacevic, C-NP, Physician Assistants: Kylee and Carly treat work-related injuries and perform pre-placement, DOT and annual physical exams. They work on-site at employers providing injury care, respiratory clearance and fit testing, and wellness services.

Kim Goss, RN, Case Coordinator: Kim oversees the nursing functions of NOH, and is a certified drug screen and breath alcohol collector, NIOSH certified for pulmonary function testing, and a certified hearing conservationist. Kim tracks patients in the clinic who are not progressing as expected and assists in the referral process for additional diagnostic testing and treatment.

Sherry Gaudette, Medical Assistant: Sherry assists providers with medical visits, performs drug and alcohol testing, audiograms, pulmonary function, vision testing, and other screening services. She is also a certified drug and alcohol collector.

Lori Deering, Industrial Rehabilitation Physical Therapist: Lori provides in-clinic and on-site industrial rehabilitation services to our business clients. She has extensive training in the Matheson System of injury prevention and occupational rehabilitation. She performs treatment of acute and chronic musculo-skeletal injuries, work station assessments, job analyses, risk analyses, job coaching, supervisory training, body mechanics and other training.

NOH's Administrative Staff:

Christine Sweeny (csweeny@nmcinc.org), Executive Director: Chris manages the overall operations and marketing of NOH services. She has a bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, an MBA, and 20 years experience in healthcare management.

Emily Dunsmore (edunsmore@nmcinc.org) Sales Associate/Clinic Medical & Administrative Support: Emily is a 7th generation St. Albans resident who greatly values the community. She has her bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration with a background in nursing as well. She has been in management positions in the service industry for several years. June Collins, Collections/Accounts Receivable Associate: June performs all functions for our Accounts Receivables, including coordinating with Insurance Companies and Company contacts. She also processes all cash and checks issued to our facility. June has years of experience in the medical field as well as great communication skills.

Sarah Royea, Registrar/Biller, and Jennifer Jarvis, Registrar/Biller Coordinator: Sarah and Jenn perform all centralized support functions for our Department. They answer phones, schedule appointments, enter charges and bill insurance companies. Sarah and Jenn both come to us with medical backgrounds as well as a strong understanding for customer service.
