Functional Capacity Evaluations
NOH conducts Functional Capacity Evaluations(FCE) to provide a systematic process of measuring and assessing an individual’s work capacity. NOH utilizes the computerized Matheson System for Functional Capacity Evaluations, which provides both an abbreviated and/or a full report to the requesting clinician. The Matheson System uses “Best Practice Research” in support of all tests. This research is revised to reflect the soundest clinical practice and supporting literature.
The FCE, which typically involves 4 hours of patient testing, focuses on major physical tolerance abilities related to musculoskeletal endurance, strength, speed, and flexibility. Turn-around-time for the report to the requesting individual is generally 1-2 weeks.
An FCE is used by physicians to assist them in determining when a patient is at maximum medical improvement; to assist with job-specific fitness-for-duty determinations after injury/illness; to assist with the advancement of job restrictions; and/or identify barriers to functional improvement.
Nurse case managers utilize FCE results to assess the individual’s potential for rehabilitation; to identify the need for vocational assistance, and to identify when an individual is ready to return to work.
Employers utilize FCE’s for the purpose of job-rearrangement or bidding to properly place individuals, and to facilitate safe return to work when restrictions or accommodations are indicated.
