NMC Providing Aid to Haiti
St. Albans, VT-- Northwestern Medical Center (NMC) is participating in relief efforts for Haiti by providing $1,000 to the American Red Cross and another $1,000 to Doctors Without Borders. In addition, the NMC staff is organizing an internal fundraising event to raise additional funds for the relief efforts.
“The NMC family is unified in our concern for the families of Haiti,” said Jill Bowen, NMC’s Chief Executive Officer. “The devastation is unthinkable and we feel we must help with the relief efforts.”
The financial aid approach is in keeping with the recommended approach for Vermont’s hospitals. “In order to alleviate congestion of people and supply items, relief agencies in Haiti have asked that donations be made in the form of financial contributions to purchase the supplies and equipment identified as critical by workers on the ground in Haiti,” said Bea Grause, Executive Director of the Vermont Association of Hospitals and Health Systems (VAHHS). “They are specifically requesting that organizations NOT send supplies and equipment at this time.”
The Community & Government Relations Committee of the NMC Board has asked that the hospital revisit the topic of aid to Haiti in the coming months, in anticipation that the national rush to help may subside long before the actual need for help subsides. At that time, NMC will consider not only additional financial aid, but also the shipment of supplies to Haitian medical clinics or other forms of aid based on the need.
“I am amazed at our community’s capacity for caring,” said Bowen. “We are pleased to be part of that and thankful that so many in northwestern Vermont are also supporting relief efforts in Haiti.”
