NMC Laboratory Earns CAP Accreditation
St. Albans, Vt.—Northwestern Medical Center’s (NMC) Laboratory has been awarded accreditation by the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation of the College of American Pathologists (CAP), based on the results of a recent on-site inspection.
The CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program, begun in the early 1960’s, is recognized by the federal government as being equal to or more stringent than the government’s own inspection program. NMC is one of more than 6,000 CAP-accredited laboratories nationwide.
During the CAP accreditation process, inspectors examine the laboratory’s records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. CAP inspectors also examine the entire staff’s qualifications, the laboratory’s equipment, facilities, safety program and record, as well as the overall management of the laboratory. This stringent inspection program is designed to specifically ensure the highest standard of care for the laboratory’s patients.
“This accreditation is a reflection of the high caliber of our staff and their on-going commitment to quality,” says David Blin, NMC’s Laboratory Manager. “We’re very proud of this accomplishment and we strive to ensure that our patients receive service of the highest quality.”
NMC’s Laboratory conducts over 325,000 tests per year, serving patients of local physician offices, as well as patients in the hospital. NMC’s Lab provides access to a full menu of highly specialized testing both internally and through our collaborative relationships with Fletcher Allen and Mayo Medical Reference Laboratories.
